Cutek-Extreme
CUTEK-the professional bamboo and timber protection system
Whatever your wood application or project– decking, siding, railings, doors, windows – CUTEK® products are proven performers. Architects, builders and manufacturers have been using and specifying CUTEK® for wood coating and preservation in some of the world’s harshest climates for nearly three decades.
CUTEK® wood preservatives are specially formulated for interior & exterior use. They are designed to penetrate deeply into any species of timber, including hardwoods and bamboo, where they work from the inside out to control liquid and gas phase moisture. This unique characteristic assists with long term dimensional stability and resistance to surface mold and mildew.
CUTEK® products do not peel off or crack, ensuring that future recoat preparation consists of a simple wash-down of the timber, rather than conventional sanding or stripping, resulting in significant savings in on-going maintenance costs and time. Further, the unique penetration technology helps to control warping, cupping, and splitting; greatly enhancing the service life of timber.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
CUTEKExtreme® is a high-performance oil-based wood preservative and stabilizer. In order for CUTEKExtreme® to function properly it is essential that it is able to diffuse deeply into the timber or bamboo. Any situation that would hinder this free diffusion such as retained moisture, insufficient time between coats, or the presence of any surface sealant or barrier, must be avoided or satisfactorily remedied by correct procedure and product selection prior to the application of CUTEKExtreme®. CUTEKExtreme® is suitable for use on brand new bamboo and timber and assists with the minimisation of extractive bleed out. Ensure that surfaces to be coated with CUTEKExtreme® are clean and Dry, with a residual moisture content of no more than 12%.
SURFACE PREPERATION
New bamboo, timbers and plywoodEnsure that substrate to be coated with CUTEKExtreme® is clean and dry. When CUTEKExtreme® is used on plywood or laminated timber, penetration beyond the glue line may be inhibited. CUTEKExtreme® can be used on CCA and other treated timbers, however timbers pre-treated with invisible film-forming wax and polymer processes such as LOSP, or water-repellent dips may prevent or slow down the free diffusion of CUTEKExtreme®.
Old, or previously coated bamboo or timber
Old, dirty, or weathered grey surfaces should be prepared by first applying CUTEKProclean® restoration agent, and then power rinsing with a home water blaster set to under 750 p.s.i. (50 bar), with a fan jet pattern to avoid damage to the wood fibers. This process can also remove tougher stains such as water marks, tannin stains, and grease stains. Once the timber or bamboo is thoroughly dry, the restoration of the surface may be completed by applying two coats of Cutek Extreme.
Please note that the use of high-pressure water alone to clean timber will not eliminate biological growth from the timber and may damage the wood fibers. The use of commercial and household cleaning solutions that contain bleaching agents such as sodium hypochlorite should be avoided. These chemical cleaners will harm the environment and may damage the timber tissue by producing a film forming reaction in the outer wood fibers that causes a subsequent coating failure. Bamboo or timber previously coated with a film-forming product that is failing such as conventional stains, linseed oil, paint, polyurethane, etc., must first be restored to their original texture and color by preparation with a paint stripper and/or CUTEKProclean® prior to the application of CUTEKExtreme®. This process can be more complex depending on the individual circumstances, so consultation should be made with a CUTEK® representative prior to the commencement of this type of project. The results that can be achieved from such a restoration are both dramatic and rewarding as warped and cupped timbers can return to their original profile and flatness, and the original natural color and beauty of the wood can be restored.
2. APPLICATION
For best results one coat of CUTEKExtreme® should be applied to all faces of the bamboo or timber prior to fixing, with a second coat of CUTEKExtreme® applied to the top once the first coat is completely penetrated and dry. The time taken for CUTEKExtreme® to penetrate the surface varies significantly, depending on aspect, species, ambient temperature, porosity and moisture content of the bamboo or timber. Thicker sections such as posts, beams and logs will require additional coats of Cutek Extreme in order to obtain adequate protection, as Cutek Extreme has a cumulative effect in wood with each application.
Apply each coat liberally with spray, brush, fabric mop or roller. When using color toned CUTEKExtreme® it is essential that the pail be stirred frequently both before and during use. The more CUTEKExtreme® that is applied and absorbed, the longer the coating will last. Equipment may be cleaned with detergent and water, or mineral turpentine.
IMPORTANT: Timber must be freed completely dry and non-greasy before application of second coat.
COVERAGE
New bamboo or timber dressed: 400-800sq ft/gal
Old restored timber dressed: 300-400sq ft/gal
New timber rough sawn: 300-400 sq ft/gal
Old restored timber rough sawn: 180-300sq ft/gal
Shingles and shakes: 84-212sq ft/gal
IMPORTANT: These figures represent typical averages for common decking and cladding timbers such as Western Red Cedar, Pine, Ipe, Tiger deck, Cumaru and other Exotics, Thermal wood, Bamboo etc. and are to used as a guideline only.
3. MAINTENANCE
Cutek Extreme must be reapplied as frequently as necessary to retain the natural beauty and color of the timber or bamboo. Surfaces that have been previously coated with Cutek Extreme that have faded, or started to “grey off” in the sun are easily and quickly restored to their original appearance without the need for any sanding and stripping by treatment with Cutek Proclean, and the application of one further coat of Cutek Extreme.
IMPORTANT: Cutek Extreme is designed to gradually fade over time rather then peel off, split or crack as is the case with many conventional film forming coatings. For this reason, the rejuvenation and maintenance of Cutek Extreme coated surfaces is a simple, fast, and cost effective process.
Recoat time varies widely according to many factors including the age and porosity of the timber, species, situation, and exposure to the weather so we are unable to offer any specific performance warranties. Typically, horizontal exterior smooth surfaces exposed to full weather such as pool decks and handrails may require recoating every 6 months to 2 years, while vertical rough-sawn siding may require maintenance less frequently.
IMPORTANT: CUTEKExtreme® is suitable for use as a clear, water repellent preservative coating on exterior bamboo and timber surfaces, however clear coated surfaces will quickly silver of on exposure to sunlight to produce a natural weathered appearance. Bamboo or timber that is coated with clear Cutek Extreme will still retain its dimensional stability and bio-toxicity characteristics. If this natural silvering of the surface is undesirable, then color toned must be used to delay the silvering process in addition to maintaining and enhancing the natural character and color of freshly oiled timber. Color toned Cutek Extreme can still look like a clear finish, depending on the color tone selected.
